This book represents a summary of Dr. John Minkler’s experiences in teaching youth about civic responsibility and democratic engagement. Its goal is to provide resources and guidance for educators, students, and community leaders to develop civic intelligence, in themselves and in students, to create a future in which they want to live. The chapters identify factors to prepare youth to address critical problems and to renew a vision for America, that they can trust and support. In doing so, the chapters will pose to the reader some important questions currently confronting our nation today.

• What are the rights and responsibilities of citizenship?
• What are the knowledge, skills and values required to renew the
• American social contract?
• How can we develop the civic intelligence of youth in K-12 schools to prepare them to meet the challenges of the 21st Century?
• What kind of future do we want to create?
