The mines of Butte always have been the true essence of Butte. Probably no one who has lived there for any considerable time has not been attuned to the mines and usually dependent upon them in one way or another. And as the people of Butte created the unique lifestyle of the great mining camp, so did the mines create the lifestyle of the people.
