About the Book
The College of Dentistry at Howard University was established in 1881. It is the fifth-oldest dental school in the United States. As a teaching and patient care institution, the college is a national and international resource for ethnic minority dental practitioners. For over 140 years, more than three thousand highly skilled dental professionals have been trained to serve their communities, particularly the underserved.
Our graduates are currently serving communities in forty of the fifty states and fifty-three countries. Our more than 100 faculty members constitute one of the best-trained dental faculties in the world, thus making our institution the capstone for transforming competent students into leaders for America and the world. As the college continues to grow, stateof-the-art facilities enhance robust educational and research programs. An innovative and strategic approach to recruiting underrepresented students and faculty have improved diversity in the college and healthcare workforce. Curriculum changes evolve to address societal needs and prepare graduates for their important role in closing gaps in health disparities.
We offer dental and dental hygiene programs and postgraduate dental programs in oral surgery, orthodontics, pedodontics, advanced education, general dentistry, and general practice. Continuing education programs for dental and dental hygiene practitioners are regular parts of the activities of the college.
This institution is unique in its mission, the character of its student body, its faculty’s complexity, its alumni’s diversity, and its supporting staff’s dedication. The programs of the college have a local community focus as well as national and international involvements. We are an institution of a proven past, a vibrant present, and a challenging future.
The College of Dentistry today is a vital component of the Howard University Center for Health Sciences and a prestigious unit among the university’s thirteen schools and colleges.
