About the Book

Author Tracy G. Herrick reveals SMASH UP! ECONOMICS.

In Smash Up! Economics, Tracy Herrick explains the economic basis for the increasing tensions between the United States and China, and predicts that increasing friction will likely lead to a war in 2026.  Since neither side in this conflict is inclined to national suicide, he foresees not a war of nuclear exchange but a naval contest in which China will seek to “own” and control the South China Sea.  The US Navy will fight to maintain its status as an international waterway, a crucial trade route for all nations, and a site of natural resources for many nations, which have legitimate claims on their development.

Mr. Herrick describes the growth and increasing power of China’s economy with reference to some of the weaknesses inherent in her political/economic system.  These weaknesses will cause China to turn increasingly inward even as she tries to assert control over those elements of her physical environment she deems essential to her continued well being.  Her leadership will come to believe that she can drive the US Navy from South China Sea, indeed most of the Western Pacific.  In this conflict, Mr. Herrick believes China will enjoy some initial success.  The United States will end it on terms that retain the South China Sea as an international waterway, and preserve the claims of all stakeholders in its resource development.

Mr. Herrick is a noted economist with degrees from Columbia and Oxford Universities.  He possesses the rare ability to connect the past, present, and the future and has been recognized twice as the most accurate contributor on the outlook for business and money market conditions by the Wall Street Journal.  He began his professional career at the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland, served as Senior Economist with Stanford research Institute, and was a Vice President in the Cashier’s Division of Bank of America.  For 25 years he was with Jefferies and Co. and served on its board of directors and as Chief Economist.
